This can happen for multiple reasons and a mechanic needs to diagnose the specific cause for this code to be triggered in your situation. Our certified mobile mechanics can come to your home or office to perform the Check Engine Light diagnostic. The P code indicates that the Powertrain Control Module PCM has discovered an abnormality in the transmission fluid pressure sensor circuit.
There may be one or more causes for the P code. One may be a faulty electronic pressure control solenoid. Another could be that there is something wrong with your transmission fluid pressure sensor, or that your vehicle has hydraulic blockages inside the internal transmission fluid passages.
You may also have low transmission fluid, dirty or contaminated transmission fluid, mechanical internal transmission failures. A faulty PCM or transmission control module is rare but possible.
Unfortunately, there may be not be any noticeable symptoms. Or you may have a disabled shifting function or your torque converter clutch may fail to engage or disengage.
Additional symptoms may include transmission slippage, harsh shifting, decreased fuel efficiency, an overheating transmission, and a stored code. Please be aware that other torque converter clutch, gear ratio, shift solenoid, lock up, or transmission slippage codes often fall under P Always start any transmission diagnosis with an inspection of the transmission fluid dipstick. If the fluid smells burned or looks abnormal it is inadequate and should be changed.
Burned fluid is a good indication that the transmission is operating at a low fluid level and unfortunately may mean that your vehicle has suffered major internal mechanical failure. Also, be sure to look for burned or shorted wiring and always replace circuitry and connectors that appear to be in bad shape.
If the system connectors, wiring, and components seem to be in good shape, connect your scanner to the diagnostic connector and record all freeze frame data and trouble codes. If the transmission fluid seems to be in good shape but the fluid level is low, add enough fluid to locate a leak and then repair it.
If the transmission works properly and the code does not appear again, then it was probably caused by transmission slippage from a low fluid level and pressure condition. If the code returns and the transmission suffers from delayed engagement, you will need to check your pump pressure.
To do this you will need a manual pressure gauge. It is often the case that electronic pressure control solenoid, transmission pressure sensor, and system wiring malfunctions are often overlooked and high-pressure pumps are often replaced when they do not need to be.Forums New posts Search forums.

These are stored in response to a problem found in the car by the system.
These DTC's identify a particular problem area and are intended to provide the technician with a guide as to where a fault might be occurring within the vehicle. They're the cause for indicator light malfunction on the dashboard.
Codes should be used in conjunction with the vehicle's service manual to discover which systems, circuits or components should be tested to fully diagnose the fault with a car code reader or professional OBD2 software. Parts or components should not be replaced with reference to only a malfunctioning indicator lamp check engine fault light. The vehicle service manual should be consulted for more information on possible causes of the fault, along with required testing.
For example, if a DTC reports a sensor fault, replacement of the sensor is unlikely to resolve the underlying problem. The fault is most likely to be caused by the systems that the sensor is monitoring, but might even be caused by the wiring to the sensor itself.
DTCs may also be triggered by faults earlier down the line. For example, a dirty MAF sensor might be causing the car to overcompensate in its fuel-trim adjustments. As a result, oxygen sensors are likely to report fuel mixture problems.
You can also access the database by downloading the printable offline version of OBD2 codes ideal for auto mechanics. TIP: This helpful resource site will reveal problem, cause, solution for every obd fault code which is picked up via computer software for car diagnostics. In general, codes that begin with P0 are Generic codes, whereas codes that begin with P1 are manufacturer-specific. Vag-Com Fault Codes: What do these mean?
These transmission's have lot of issues, mostly with the mechatronic, like the oil pressure accumulator holding housing prone to cracking, the accumulator itself goes bad, lot of electronic problems in the circuit board, the list goes on forever.
The best way to repair these to get a new mechatronic, which here cost more then 1k euro. The anatomy of the fault code Fault codes can be a wealth of information!
Here is a basic guide to understand some of the components of the fault code. We can break down the fault code into the following parts: - The fault code numbers - The fault code description - The freeze frame data Fault code number - When using the Ross-Tech tool, the fault code number displayed will have a unique Manufacturer VAG number and sometimes a SAE- Society of Automotive Engineers number.
Fault code description - One of the most overlooked part of the fault code is the description. We, at Ross-Tech Technical support receive a lot of questions about fault codes, from 'what does the fault mean? P - Bank1; camshaft adjustment -N Short circuit to ground The fault above tells us the ECM has detected the N 'circuit' on bank 1 has been or is shorted to 'ground'.
This is the part where most people get a bit confused and need help. Diagnoses will require an understanding of the N function and circuit and the way it is connected to the ECM. We will not get into too much detail here, this is not a repair manual. Last edited by DrPeter; at AM. Hey thanks for this Doc, very clear and helpful. I'll add to this a bit more info on fault codes Some fault codes can have more than one DTC code, in some cases 3 variants of the code for the same thing.
Maybe Seb will chime in and explain why this came to be. When talking about fault codes, it is VERY important you give a complete number. For example, people will say they are dealing with a "OH" code. Miss Manners says you should instead state you have a P fault code.
Also note that any time there are a bunch of zeros in front of a fault code, they are part of the fault code. If you were to even say aone might think you mean P which is a code for a Shift Soleniod 4 N So is always stated asnever shorten a code. Kudos for Peter for the chart above. Thanks Jef, I have added this page that will help make the diagnoses a bit easier when it comes to checking the fault code that has an electrical fault.
I know I could print the image but the highlighting, while useful, could obscure the text. Regards, Tom. Thanks for the reply, Dana.
